Blue Abyss Receives Ohio Capital Budget Funding

Brook Park, Ohio, USA – July 8, 2024:

Blue Abyss Chief Executive Officer, John Vickers confirmed the company has received one-time funding of $1.8 million from the Ohio Capital Budget to advance its mission of fostering innovation, education, and economic growth within the region.

The Blue Abyss center will serve as a hub for scientists, engineers, and educators, providing the resources and infrastructure necessary to explore and expand extreme environments from subsea to space. The company recently purchased land in Brook Park, adjacent to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and close to NASA’s Glenn Research Centre, Neil A. Armstrong Test Facility and Ohio Aerospace Institute, where it aims to commence construction of its facilities in the second half of 2024.

John Vickers, Blue Abyss Chief Executive Officer:

We are thrilled and honored to receive this support from the Ohio Capital Budget. This funding will enable us to accelerate our plans, bring our vision to life and secure Ohio as a global leader in extreme environment research and training. The investment will help us create jobs and attract top-tier talent and research opportunities to Ohio. Our sincere thanks go to State Representative Tom Patton, State Senator Matt Dolan, and Sean Joyce of inSITE Advisory Group, for supporting and advocating our vision for the future in Ohio.

Mayor Edward A. Orcutt, The City of Brook Park:

Thank you to State Senator Dolan and State Representative Patton for their continued support of Brook Park and Blue Abyss. I look forward to working with John Vickers and his visionary team at Blue Abyss to bring this catalytic project to our Region. The next generation of Space Exploration runs through Brook Park.

Thomas F. Patton, Ohio State Representative, District 17:

With reputable partners like NASA and Ohio Aerospace Institute, the Blue Abyss project will further elevate Ohio as a hub for aerospace research. I am confident this will have a positive impact on the entire Northeast Ohio region and beyond."

The Blue Abyss Centre and hotel will occupy a 12-acre site adjacent to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, close to NASA’s training facilities and world-class universities and hospitals. The facility will house the world’s largest and deepest R&D Pool, measuring 40m by 50m on the surface, with a 16m wide shaft plunging to a depth of 50m. It will hold 42,000 cubic metres of water. That’s enough to fill 17 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The centre will include additional facilities, combined with immersive XR technology to enable unparalleled extreme environment analogue experiences:

  • Human Centrifuge; to enable training and physiology research at high G.
  • Hypobaric and Hyperbaric Chambers; enabling training and research in hypoxic and pressurized environments.
  • Blue Abyss Parabolic Flight 2.0; enabling microgravity research, training and public discovery.

About the Ohio Capital Budget:

The Ohio Capital Budget allocates funding to infrastructure and development projects across the state which enhance Ohio's economic growth, improve public services, and support community development, including a series of one-time strategic community investments, targeting projects that promise substantial economic, educational, and social benefits. In a June 28 website update, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jon Husted, and members of the Ohio General Assembly announced significant investments contained in House Bill 2, the Capital Budget Bill.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine:

This capital budget is all about creating jobs, growing our economy, and directly impacting the people of Ohio where they live and work. The investments we’re making today impact our schools and universities, our hospitals, our parks and recreational spaces, and our communities. We know these needed investments will continue to make Ohio the best place to live, work, and raise a family for years to come
